British musicians urged PM Starmer to cap resale ticket prices.

People stand in queues for hours for things that matter to them, and music sits very close to the heart of this country. When tickets are swept up by a small number of actors and resold at extraordinary prices, the sense of fairness that underpins public life is weakened. Successive governments have promised to uphold that sense of fairness in many areas, from welfare to consumer protection, and this is another test of whether words lead to action. A price cap will not be a magic wand, and there will be debates about details, enforcement and unintended consequences. Yet it is difficult to look at reports of tickets listed for thousands of pounds and feel that the present arrangements reflect well on any of the institutions involved. Whatever course is chosen ought to be clear, consistent and communicated honestly to the fans who keep the whole enterprise alive.
