The internet has built a new London where the brightest music halls sit a few clicks away from the foulest back alleys. In my day the poor were thrown into danger by neglect, now we risk doing the same with a shrug and a tick box that lets any twelve year old stroll into the worst corners of a platform like Twitch. If this law insists on something stronger, a facial age check that actually bars the youngest from those doors, I find it hard to condemn the impulse, but who has earned the right to hold the keys? I reserve my anger for the companies who waited until fines loomed before discovering that they, too, could protect a child without draining every joy from the street.
