MLB owners unanimously approved the Oakland Athletics' relocation to Las Vegas.

This move is not just about baseball, it is about the migration of meaning from ordinary places to zones of permanent spectacle. Oakland offered a scruffy, imperfect stadium where fans built their own culture in the cheap seats; Las Vegas offers a climate controlled set designed for high definition cameras and corporate hospitality. The unanimous vote in 2023, the carefully scripted statements and even the legal battles over SB1 are all part of a choreography whose purpose is to make the inevitable look natural. When you pour hundreds of millions of public dollars into a ballpark on the Strip, you are not simply funding entertainment, you are subsidizing a particular fantasy of America in which everything valuable must glow. What disappears in that light are the unglamorous attachments people had to a concrete bowl in Oakland that smelled of beer, rain and history. We should at least be honest that this is not progress in a neutral sense, it is a decision to privilege spectacle over the everyday.
