From a few bright pixels on Instagram people are deriving entire theories of secret engagements and moral character. In a laboratory such a leap from limited data to sweeping conclusion would be called bad science. The light that bounces off a ring only tells you about metal and angle, not about promises made in private. If we cared half as much about evidence in public debate as we do about celebrity romance, our national conversations would be far less noisy.
