We should always be willing to use the tools of science to relieve suffering, yet I worry that this proposal arrives before we have done the hard work of building a healthier society. Thirty five billion dollars aimed at a handful of weight loss drugs will do little if our schools still serve junk, our cities lack safe places to move, and our advertising machinery sells unhealthy food with relentless charm. America deserves a bold national strategy on obesity, not a narrow fix that will be easy for opponents to caricature as a giveaway to drug companies. Until that larger vision is clear, this rule feels like a risky first step launched without the speech that explains the journey.
