As someone who once warned about the military industrial complex, I recognize another kind of complex forming here, the advertising industrial complex. When the business of public conversation depends almost entirely on corporate sponsors, their departures can feel like a national security threat to the platform. Yet those same companies have a duty to distance themselves from antisemitic rhetoric, or they too are complicit. This is not a simple morality play about heroes and villains. It is a reminder that we built a communications system where one angry billionaire and a dozen nervous brand managers can shake the civic square just by moving their budgets. A healthier system would not collapse every time principle and profit collide.
